COVID19 and its impact on female victims of HIV AIDs in Badagry

This report focuses on the challenges faced by women living with HIV and AIDs during the lockdown which lasted for a period of 6-months. It was a case of multiple jeopardy for women living with HIV and AIDs during the COVID-19 lockdown as this prevented access to medication and treatment at the health facilities. The outbreak of the pandemic altered the HIV administration and affected women particularly who were the most hit as they are more susceptible to contracting the disease. 20,500 persons dies od AIDs related causes in Nigeria in the first 6 months of 2020 according to reports from the National Agency for the Control of AIDS- NACA. The Nigeria Health Watch attributes the physical nature of women which makes it more likely for men to transit the infection to them and gender-based violence which makes more women victims of sexual abuse, with lack of sexual education and active sexual life to factors affecting women living with HIV and AIDs. Experiences of women living with the HIV virus attest to the challenges they faced during the lockdown in accessing drugs and medical help which led to the loss of life among many Against future recurrence, medical practitioners recommend that government step up HIV management at the different health centres. Access to HIV testing and uninterrupted antiretroviral medications may be disrupted if countries continue to divert resources to fighting COVID-19.
